The Synology DiskStation DS223 is a 2-bay network-attached storage unit for homes and small offices. It comes with two pre-installed hard drives providing a total storage capacity of 24 TB. A 1.7 GHz quad-core Realtek RTD1619B processor handles data management and file serving, while 2 GB of DDR4 RAM maintains system performance during multi-user access. The unit runs the DiskStation Manager operating system, which supports the Btrfs file system for point-in-time data recovery using snapshots.

Connectivity is provided via a single 1 GbE RJ-45 port, supporting data transfer rates of up to 1000 Mbit/s. Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports allow for the connection of external storage or peripherals. The hot-swappable bays support 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA drives and allow for replacement without powering down the system. A 92 mm fan regulates temperature, operating at a noise level of 14.6 dB. Data redundancy options include RAID 0, 1, or JBOD to protect against data loss from a single drive failure.
