The QNAP TL-R1620SDC 16-bay SAS 12Gb/s expansion enclosure increases the capacity of a host NAS or server. It functions as a dedicated storage unit rather than a standalone computer, connecting via high-speed SAS backplanes. The unit holds 16 drives (2.5-inch or 3.5-inch), which are not included. Support for SAS-2 and SAS-3 ensures data transfer rates up to 12Gb/s, while Broadcom SAS DataBolt technology aggregates bandwidth to support older 6Gb/s infrastructure alongside modern drives. The unit is intended for high-density backup or archive workflows.

The short-depth chassis fits into compact rack cabinets. Two 500 W power supply units provide redundancy to keep the enclosure running if one source fails. Three 80 mm fans provide active cooling for the internal drives. Front-panel LED indicators show the status of power, network connectivity, and drive health. The drive bays are hot-swappable, allowing for maintenance or capacity upgrades without shutting down the unit.
