The Synology DiskStation DS423 is a 4-bay desktop NAS for home and small office environments. Four pre-installed hard drives provide 16 TB of total capacity for centralized data storage. The unit uses a 1.7 GHz Realtek RTD1619B quad-core processor and 2 GB of DDR4 memory. Storage can be configured as RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, or JBOD, allowing users to balance performance against data redundancy. Network file sharing is supported via SMB, NFS, and FTP, while iSCSI support allows the device to provide block-level storage for workstations or servers.

The black chassis contains two 80 mm fans, which operate at a noise level of 20.6 dB. Two Gigabit Ethernet ports provide connectivity, while two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports support external drives or peripherals. The DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system provides a web interface for managing volumes and user permissions. The system supports the Btrfs file system and snapshots for improved data integrity, allowing files to be restored if they are accidentally deleted or corrupted. Hot-swappable drive bays allow drives to be replaced without shutting down the system. The unit is powered by a 90 W adapter and consumes approximately 4.97 W during normal operation.
